TOPIC: let universities choose political candidates

If a politician's greatest addiction is getting re-elected so as to stay in power, maybe our future planet's political structure shouldn't have re-elections at all. Maybe a candidate should only be elected for one term - say 5 years and then that's it. Then they could spend more time and effort doing a good job.
In case political parties got around this by trying to keep their own party in power instead of just their leader, perhaps electoral candidates should be chosen by the people, or by universities - some independent institution with a purpose other than just politics.
If there were say 100 universities in a nation (even though OFP might not have nations), if universities continue to exist in the duture planet, and if each university could put up a candidate - either a graduate of that University, or a professor, and maybe ther be some regional or other means of reducing the 100 candidates down to 10... each candidate would of course get equal time on tv for free so they won't need to take money from lobbiests who will demand 'paybacks'. That would make elections less expensive overall and we'd see less of scenarios such as in the US, where only the richest candidates with the most successful financial backing can afford to run for president.

hmm, but then you'd still have an elite system where only the privileged could become elected (i.e. those who'd been to university). I like your idea bout restricting the time a person can be elected for - not giving someone too much unlimited power is a good idea, but can also mean that someone can put off doing something till the end of their term, then leave it for the next person to do.
Maybe a politician should say what they're going to do and be forced to sign something saying they'll do it, then if they lied about what they were going to do just to get elected there'd be concrete proof!
Not sure what they'd do after that though...
